Acupuncture

We offer acupuncture to clients as part of the centre's holistic approach to care. All Acupuncturists are qualified members of a professional body.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of therapy that has been used for over 5000 years. It involves the careful placement of fine needles into particular points on the body called acupuncture points. The needles are left into position for as little as a few seconds or up to twenty minutes.

How does acupuncture work?

Modern research shows that acupuncture can affect most of the body systems including the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems. It is suggested that it also can have a balancing affect on hormones, antibody production and allergic responses. In traditional Chinese terms acupuncture regulates the flow of energy (chi) in the body restoring the natural balance (yin and yang).

How can acupuncture help?

It is known that acupuncture increases the body's release of natural pain killers (endorphins and serotonin) and modifies the way pain signals are received. It is therefore suitable for a wide range of painful conditions.

Because of balancing effect of acupuncture, it is used to treat hormonal symptoms e.g. hot flushes and many other conditions. It also leads to an improved sense of well being in the person. There is evidence to suggest the fact that acupuncture is effective in treating the following symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

How will acupuncture make me feel?

  • During your therapy you can expect to feel relaxed, comfortable and supported physically and emotionally.
  • You may sit or lie during your treatment.
  • Needles may be inserted in places seemingly unconnected with the site of the problem e.g. in the back of the hand for treatment of headaches.
  • Your treatment will last approximately 40 minutes.
  • Afterwards you will probably feel very relaxed. Some people experience feelings of euphoria. It is advisable to rest for a short time at the centre before travelling home.
  • Your practitioner will also advise that you drink plenty of water.

Following treatment

There may be a little bruising at the needle site and occasionally slight bleeding. You may notice a slight increase in symptoms initially (48hrs), then an improvement.

How many sessions can I have?

Prior to using the complementary therapies and treatments at the Olive Tree, you will meet with the Centre Manager to discuss the different therapies on offer and agree those which would best support your needs.

Members are entitled to 4 free sessions of any therapy they choose or a combination of therapies.
Following this we would request that circumstances allowing, members make a minimum donation of £5.00 per session.

Where will the therapy take place?

All therapy sessions take place in our dedicated therapy room at the centre.

We have an electric couch which can be lowered to assist those with mobility difficulties. It can also be adjusted to a sitting or semi sitting position for those who prefer not to lie flat. Please discuss this with your therapist.

How do I book a therapy session?

All sessions are booked through the manager or an appointed volunteer. You can book in person, by telephone on 01293 534465 or by e-mail.
