Coaching Programme

A confidential coaching service operates within The Olive Tree cancer support centre for cancer patients, their carers and family.

Why Coaching?

Coaching is a way of supporting you, in a non-judgmental and confidential environment. It helps you to think about the difficulties you are experiencing with a view to finding your own answers. Our coaches will ask the right questions to help you see and do things in new and different ways. This will enable you to rebuild your self-confidence, take back control of your life and make different and better choices in the future.

Coaching can be especially effective to help make work and career decisions, including returning to work or not. It can also help to resolve personal issues which may have developed during the cancer experience.

Coaching is not always an easy process as it may mean talking about issues that are uncomfortable. However, it can often be a relief to air these feelings, thoughts and problems with someone who can help you put them in perspective and then find ways to resolve them.

Dealing with these issues can alleviate distressing symptoms such as depression, sleep disturbance, nightmares, anxiety, headaches and more.

Coaching can help you to:

  • Rebuild your self-confidence.
  • Take back control of your life.
  • Make different and better choices about personal and work issues.
  • Better understand yourself and others.

Who is coaching for?

The Olive Tree offers coaching to people who are dealing with a diagnosis of cancer. It also offers coaching to relatives and partners of someone who has received a diagnosis of cancer or who is coping with bereavement as the result of cancer.

Coaching is an active, participatory process. During your sessions, with help from your coach, you will set goals and agree various actions and tasks for you to think about and do in order to achieve those goals.  Your coach will assist you to reach your goals. However, coaching is about helping you to find your own solutions rather than having someone else tell you what they think you should do.

If you decide you would like to see a coach, you will be offered an initial appointment with one of our case managers for an assessment. This process can also take place by telephone.
During this session you can ask any questions and discuss any concerns you may have about coaching and decide together whether it feels useful and appropriate to your needs.

If you both feel that coaching would be helpful, you will be referred to one of our personal coaches who will contact you and agree an appointment time with you.

Telephone coaching is also offered, which may be more appropriate if you are not within easy reach of Crawley.

Initially you will be offered 4 sessions with your coach. After this, your case manager and your coach will review progress and decide if any more coaching sessions are needed.

However, if you and your case manager decide that coaching is not what you need, alternatives will be discussed. We also have a list of other agencies and approaches that we may be able to refer you to.

Where do coaching sessions take place?

Generally, all sessions take place at The Olive Tree, unless by prior arrangement with your coach. Other venues are available, or telephone coaching may be an option.

How much will it cost?

The Olive Tree offers coaching to members free of charge, however donations are always gratefully received.
