The Bowen Technique

We offer The Bowen Technique to clients as part of the Centre’s holistic approach to care.  All practitioners are qualified members of a professional body.

What is The Bowen Technique?

The Bowen Technique is a very gentle form of healing developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is an extremely versatile therapy, with many procedures that can be applied for different situations depending on individual needs.

Ultimately the technique helps the body to balance and re-align itself on many levels. It is truly holistic in that you may be treated for something specific but this will also have an impact upon other difficulties that you are experiencing. The results experienced with Bowen are often remarkable, sometimes even after the first session

How does Bowen work?

In a Bowen session light moves are applied to specific places on the body, either on the skin or through light clothing. Moves are made on skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. A treatment will also address deeper levels of the body including connective tissue and bones.  These moves work directly with the body fascia and sends signals via the nervous system which helps the body retrieve its memory of a relaxed and balanced state of mind.

What to expect in a treatment session

Therapy sessions are very gentle and non-invasive.  Bowen moves are made over specific points on the body and generally clients will remain fully clothed, although light clothing is advised.  People generally find a Bowen treatment an extremely relaxing experience.  Your treatment will last approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour.  Afterwards you may feel tired and it is advisable to rest for a short while at the centre before travelling home.  Your therapist will also advise you to drink plenty of water.

The Bowen Technique may help alleviate:

  • Back problems
  • Emotional problems
  • Headaches, migraine and sinus problems
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Skeletal and muscular problems
  • Poor mobility
  • Respiratory problems
  • Stress

How many sessions can I have?

Prior to using the complementary therapies and treatments at the Olive Tree, you will meet with the Centre Manager, or an appointed volunteer to discuss the different therapies on offer and agree those which would best support your needs. Members are entitled to 4 free sessions of any therapy they choose or a combination of therapies.  Following this we would request that circumstances allowing, members make a  minimum donation of £5.00 per session.  We would suggest that treatments should be at least a week apart and not less than 24 hours following any clinical treatment.

Where will the therapy take place?

All therapy sessions take place in one of our dedicated therapy rooms at the centre.  We have adjustable couches which can be lowered to assist those with mobility difficulties. It can also be adjusted to a semi sitting position for those who prefer not to lie flat. Please discuss this with your therapist.

How do I book a therapy session?

All sessions are booked through the manager or an appointed volunteer.  You can book in person, by telephone or by e mail.
